Birmingham Meeting: Historic and Effective

On January 31, 2009 more than a thousand people crowded the sanctuary of the historic 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham for a New Baptist Covenant regional meeting.

Highlights of the event included work sessions on the Luke 4 mandate, as well as messages from President Jimmy Carter, Marian Wright Edelman, and Wayne Snodgrass.

The meeting was co-chaired by Gary Furr, pastor of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church and Arthur Price, pastor at 16th Street Baptist Church. Brent McDougal of the Alabama Cooperative Baptist Fellowship served as the event's coordinator.

Regional New Baptist Covenant Meeting

The Baptist Border Crossing is a Midwest gathering which grew out of the New Baptist Covenant Celebration held in Atlanta in 2008. The event will be held Thursday evening, April 2, through Saturday noon, April 4, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Liberty, Missouri (suburban Kansas City). The event is being planned by a coalition of Baptists from a wide variety of conventions, associations, and fellowships.

Jimmy Carter, Tony Campolo, David Coffey, David Goatley, and Carolyn Ann Knight are among the event's featured speakers. The meeting will also feature a large exhibit area, a bookstore and a series of breakout sessions.

The Rev. Dr. Wallace S. Hartsfield II, Pastor of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, and Dr. Jim Hill, Executive Director of the Baptist General Convention of Missouri, are serving as co-chairpersons for the event.

Regional New Baptist Covenant Meeting
April 24-25
Wake Forest University

"This is The Year for God to Act" is the theme of the Southeast Regional New Baptist Covenant Celebration at Wake Forest University. April 24-25, 2009. Co-chairs for the meeting are Serenus Churn, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Reuban Gilliam, pastor of North Winston Baptist Church, and Bill Leonard, Dean of the Divinity School at Wake Forest University.

President Jimmy Carter will bring the concluding message on Saturday. The opening address will be provided by Maya Agelou, Renolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest and a noted poet. Also speaking will be the Rev. Amy Dean, co-pastor of Park Road Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC and Reverend Dr. Clifford Jones, Senior Pastor of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte NC.

In addition to the featured speakers, a series of break out sessions will offer practical ways to implement the Luke 4 mandate. A Friday dinner sponsored by Baptists Today magazine will honor James Dunn with the Judson-Rice Award.

Midwest Regional New Baptist Covenant Meeting

The Midwest Regional Meeting of the New Baptist Covenant will be begin at noon on August 6th and conclude 9:30 PM on August 7th at the new Embassy Suites Hotel and Convention Center in Norman, Oklahoma. 

Messages will be given by Wade Burleson, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist in Enid, Oklahoma and past President of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma,  Major Jemison, pastor of St. John’s Missionary Baptist in Oklahoma City and past President of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and by Ellis Orozco, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of McAllen, Texas, who has served on served on the Administrative Committee and on the board of the Christian Life Commission of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Testimonies will be given by Wilford Brown, former National Coordinator for Intercultural Ministries for American Baptist Churches and now the Campus Minister at Bacone College in Muskogee, OK, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry, former Oklahoma Congressman J.C. Watts, and Sarah Stewart, a recent graduate of Truett Seminary who is now a Minister in Residence at First Baptist in Oklahoma City. 

Other participants include Tim Eaton, President of Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College, Javier Elizondo, Executive Vice President and Provost of the Baptist University of the Americas, and Dwight McKissic, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas and past President of the Southern Baptists of Texas Pastor’s Conference.

Workshops and breakout sessions will focus on building bridges across cultures  in order to better minister to the families of the imprisoned and the impoverished.
